World on a String,1951

World on a String,1951

The dreams of a young woman, my mother at 17, captured in a moment of youthful confidence before a winter ball or spring dance. So well educated, so smart, but in 1951 a woman's options were limited.

Hide a Lot of Stuff Under There

Hide a Lot of Stuff Under There

After painting an entire gown in multiple images, I often found myself lost in the joys of the non objective quality of the mountainous fabric. The title harkens back to a comment my daughter made when shopping for her own bridal gown, "You could hid a lot under there.". The remark resonated with me because women are not often honest, consciously or unconsciously, with themselves or with their partner as marriage looms on the horizon. It is acrylic on linen.

Pivotal Moment

Pivotal Moment

The title, Pivotal Moment, reflects the profound experience a woman may have as she decides to walk down the aisle on her wedding day. The wedding gown is a metaphor for all that marriage is and the dark ground represents all that is unknown to her, the leap of faith. Not visible in the image is the spiritual blue found near the edges.

It is acrylic on canvas.

Ritual Practices

Ritual Practices

Influenced heavily by genre and emblem painting of the 17th c. Dutch, the contemporary scene of ritual preparation of the bride comments on the preoccupation with the superficial, the dreams of little girls and the reality of domestic life found in the disguised symbolism.

A mature woman comments upon marriage here, you know what she thinks. It is not about the recent mastectomy at all. Its about hindsight, being at peace with the choices made in life and looking forward to more. Pity is not the message, get past that to the sheer strength of the female will.

The loving, faithful wife is now a widow. At 95 she has outlived her friends and most of her family. Her countenance is ever optimistically generous. The snake plant hints that she is my mother-in-law and the snuffed candle....

And a Woman Shall Leave Her Home...

The wedding gown is a metaphor for all that marriage is and the dark ground represents all that is unknown to her. The leap of faith is supported by the values held dear by her family and the wisdom of her mother.
